Handwoven in the Santa Cruz del Quiché region of Guatemala, this floppy extra-wide sun hat is hand-braided from eco-friendly palm leaves by Kʼicheʼ artisans using techniques passed down through generations. Breathable, durable, and beautifully structured, it offers generous sun coverage with distinctive artisan character.

Each hat includes one removable woven intention band, handcrafted by Quechua artisans. Woven with symbolic patterns, each band represents a meaningful aspiration such as gratitude, protection, intuition, strength, love, balance, or transformation.

The model images feature the Gratitude intention band, representing thankfulness for life’s gifts. The standalone hat image features the Surrender intention band, symbolizing release, renewal, and letting go of what no longer serves you.

About the Artisans

Santa Cruz del Quiché is home to the Kʼicheʼ people, Indigenous descendants of the Maya. The Kʼicheʼ language is one of the Mayan languages still spoken in Guatemala, and the name Kʼicheʼ is commonly translated as “many trees.”

The art of palm-hat making has been passed down through generations of artisan families. The process combines traditional Kʼicheʼ design, respect for natural materials, and collaborative family work.

Hat making is shared among women and men across multiple generations. Family members may braid palm leaves, weave decorative elements, shape the hats, or complete the tailoring. This cooperative approach supports artisan livelihoods, strengthens local communities, and helps preserve a culturally important craft.
